It’s time to Take a Hike, Salmon Edition! Join NCRLT staff on an hike at our hidden gem: the Deer Creek Preserve! Led by the Land Trust staff and a representative from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), this is a moderate hike of three to four miles, depending on participant interest. The Preserve is 600 acres of mixed conifer forest, chaparral, and oak woodland that is bisected by Deer Creek and encompasses Lower Deer Creek falls, including the California Department of Fish and Wildlife managed fish ladder. It is surrounded by Lassen National Forest and land owned by Sierra Pacific Industries and remains one of few places within the Deer Creek watershed that has not been affected by recent catastrophic wildfires. We will meet at 8am at the Chico Park and Ride (the one furthest from the HWY) and depart promptly at 8:15am and expect to arrive at 9:20 am at the South Entrance of Deer Creek Trailhead (by Windy Cut Bridge). The trailhead is located roughly 40 miles from the Chico Park and Ride up HWY 32, taking a left off K-line Road. There should be a sign that says “Deer Creek 6”. Continue for 1.2 miles where you will take a right, there will be a sign that says “Deer Creek, Windy Cut Bridge”. You will continue for 4.3 miles. Once you cross the Windy Cut Bridge, the small parking area will be on the left side of the road. This is where we will meet prior to the start of the hike. The google maps link for the exact location is below. Chico Park & Ride to Deer Creek Trailhead (South Entrance) Supportive footwear, light clothing layers, sunscreen, a hat, ample water, and snacks are recommended. There are a few, moderately steep, sections where trekking poles may come in handy for those that like extra stability and support.
